Quick Answers

Trademark Questions

A trademark is a distinctive sign, symbol, word, or phrase
that identifies and distinguishes your goods or services
from those of others. In Ghana, trademark registration gives
you exclusive rights to use your mark in connection with
specific goods/services and provides legal protection
against infringement. It’s essential for building brand
recognition and protecting your business identity in the
competitive Ghanaian market.

The trademark registration process in Ghana typically takes
12-18 months from filing to registration. This includes
examination (3-6 months), publication in the Gazette (60
days opposition period), and final registration. With our
local expertise and expedited services, we can help navigate
the process more efficiently.

In Ghana, you can register: words, names, slogans, logos,
designs, colors, sounds, and even smells as trademarks. The
mark must be distinctive, not generic, not deceptive, and
not similar to existing marks. We’ll help you assess your
mark’s eligibility during our free consultation.

Our Standard Package is GH₵2,500 per class (includes

Patent Questions

In Ghana, you can patent new, inventive, and industrially
applicable inventions including: technical solutions to
problems, machines, processes, chemical compositions,
pharmaceutical formulations, and agricultural innovations.
Software and business methods are generally not patentable,
but software-driven inventions with technical effects may
qualify.

Patents in Ghana are valid for 20 years from the filing
date, subject to payment of annual maintenance fees. Utility
models (petty patents) are valid for 10 years. After
expiration, the invention enters the public domain and can
be freely used by anyone.

Yes! Public disclosure before filing can destroy your patent
rights in Ghana. We recommend filing a patent application
(or provisional application) before any public disclosure,
publication, sale, or offer for sale. Contact us immediately
if you need urgent filing to preserve your rights.
